Language

Time Zone

  • Costa Rica is on the same time zone as our Salt Lake City mountain time.

Electricity

  • The power plug sockets used in Costa Rica are Type A and Type B.

Climate

  • Although Costa Rica is warm and dry, Costa Rica is incredibly rainy so be sure to bring clothing items that are accustomed for the warm weather and rain. A poncho or rain coat is recommended.

Health

  • Medical insurance is recommended when traveling to Costa Rica but not required.
  • Basic vaccines for hepatitis A and B are recommended, as well as rabies and tetanus, before making the trip.

Tips

  • Take note that although all tourism workers are paid a fixed salary, tips are used as their main income. It is considerate to tip your tourism workers although it is not required. Tourism workers should only be tipped if exceptional service is provided.

Currency

  • The legal currency in Costa Rica is the Colon. 1 US dollar is equal to 540.932 CRC.
  • US$ dollars and major credit cards are widely accepted.
  • Exchange money only at banks and approved change offices.
  • ATMs are located throughout the country. Some of them remain closed from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Remember not to flash your cash.

SOLO FEMALE TRAVEL

  • Avoid walking, jogging, or sightseeing alone in secluded areas, especially at night.
  • Do not share the details of your itinerary on social media or with strangers.
  • Understand the risks of traveling alone and being with people you do not know.
  • You can trust the police. They are here to help you.
  • Always keep in touch with your family and friends.

Recommend Clothing

Costa Rica's climate is hot and humid, with frequent rain, so you should pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing made of synthetic fabrics. You can dress casually, but you should avoid jeans and tight clothing. Here are some clothing items to consider packing for your trip:
  • Beachwear: Swimsuits, bikinis, tankinis, sandals, and water shoes
  • Rain jacket: A waterproof, breathable jacket with a hood is essential, even during the dry season
  • Hiking clothes: Long, loose pants or leggings, and tennis shoes or hiking boots
  • City clothes: Closed-toed shoes, long pants, and a jacket or sweater
  • Other items: A lightweight neck gaiter for sun, wind, and dust protection, and a warm pullover
The main difference is the amount of rain. It doesn't rain as much in the cloud forest as it does in the rain forest. The species of flora and fauna found in each may also differ.
Approximately 903 species.
Although the water is safe we do recommend drinking bottled water.
The Colon (CRC) although dollars are widely accepted.
Outlets are the same as standard US outlets.
Inspect Repellant! A comfortable pair of hiking boots and a rain coat with a hood or poncho.
